Lots of vaccum questions

There are a lot of hoses (I think vacuum hoses) that are missing or not plugged in. I need to find out where everything goes. This could definitely have something to do with the idling/stalling problems.

New Fuel Filter

This morning I switched out the old fuel filter for a new one. The old one didn't even have the bypass line connected. I also changed out the thermostat.

The first drive...If you can call it that

Here is the first attempt to drive it around the neighborhood. Pretty funny stuff...obviously it has a long way to go. The timing is off, the popping in the carb is still happening, the power steering needs work and the brakes are awful. Other than that and 100 other things she's running like a champ.

Plugs, Wires and Distributor Cap

After getting it running we realized it was inconsistently making a popping sound out of the carb. Especially when we gave it gas. So we started going through a tune up. First up, plugs and wires, distributor cap and rotor. The picture is all the old stuff we pulled out.

Fuel Pump

I wish I had taken a video of the car before we started working on it. It was turning over, but it wouldn't fire. First thing we did was try to siphon out the old gas before we even attempted to get it up and running. After several different methods that weren't working we finally realized that the gas tank was bone dry. So, I ran out and got gas and some Sta-bil. I was told that these older cars don't handle the ethanol in our fuel as well as the newer ones, so you need to use Sta-bil when you fill up. I had a little more hope for the car since now it had gas, but nope...still nothing. So a friend came over and we poured a little gas straight into the carb, and low and behold it cranked right up. So what we learned was that the carb wasn't getting gas. So the next morning we changed the fuel pump. That was what it needed.
I've been searching for a year or two now for a Grand Wagoneer. I love the classic, old school look paired with the powerful V8 engine and 4x4. Totally different than other cars on the road these days. About 4 months ago I set a notification on my phone to notify me when one popped up on Craigslist. Every now and then one would peak my interest, and I would call or text about it. I even looked/test drove one about a year ago. Well on Friday, May 23, 2014 I found one about 20 miles from my house. I am far from a mechanic, so I asked a buddy of mine who knows a lot more than me if he would come check it out. It was turning over, but not running. The beast was pretty rough, but the exterior was straight, wood grain looked pretty good and it had a lot of original parts. So long story short, I bought it, and with the help of a couple friends and a big trailer we got it home and in my back driveway! Now...the journey begins.
